TRANSNET: Flemming Street Rehabilitation

The project was for the road condition investigation, recommendations for the pavement rehabilitation, proposed alternatives, including operation and maintenance requirements for different pavement scenarios, over a length of some 1,3km used predominantly by heavy manganese ore delivery trucks in the Port of Port Elizabeth.

The project was complicated by the presence of operational railway lines within the roadway that had to be kept live.

AfriCoast was involved in the concept and preliminary design stage of this R50 million project and all the way to the detailed specifications for construction. Once the project moved into the construction stage, the Contractor appointed AfriCoast to be responsible for the design reviews and optimization in terms of costs for a revised pavement proposal for Flemming Street, while providing quality control and supervision services from an engineering perspective.

The services rendered by Africoast Consulting Engineers included:

  • Review of the existing designs, finalise designs, approval of final designs/construction drawings by Client, issuance of Construction Drawings
  • Technical Administration i.e  site  instructions,  record  keeping,  quality  control documentation, operational  and  maintenance  manuals,  as-built  drawings,  technical  monthly reports, final close out reports.
