SANRAL Road Safety Audits

Africoast Consulting Engineers was appointed by SANRAL to conduct road safety audits in along the R72 between Bushamans River and Port Alfred in the Eastern Cape. Both a standard road safety audit and a further audit dealing and focusing specifically on pedestrian safety were undertaken. While conducting these audits Africoast made certain recommendations to provide convenience and safety for pedestrian movement in the way of footpaths, guardrails, and road markings.  The investigation included but was not limited to:

• Recent relevant crash data
• Speed regimes
• Intersection control
• Pedestrian and cyclists
• Proximity of public facilities, e.g schools, hospitals, clinics, etc
• Lighting
• Intersections in built-up areas
• Road signs and carriageway markings
• Widths of culvert and bridge structures
• Access to properties adjacent to the roadway
• General traffic flow and road user behaviour during peak and off-peak traffic periods
