The Beaches External Façade Repair
AfriCoast Consulting Engineers (Pty) Ltd was appointed by the Body Corporate to carryout inspections and investigations to the 20-storey The Beaches residential apartment block on the Port Elizabeth beachfront.
Inspections carried out by Africoast to the structure revealed the following:
- Severe concrete spalling with exposed corroded rebar
- Cracking to the external facades
- Joint sealant failure around window frames
Some concrete elements were found to be so badly corroded that they had to be demolished and rebuilt. In other instances new rebar had to be installed as the original bars had corroded away.
Following the inspection and report given to the Body Corporate, AfriCoast was appointed to design remedial works, prepare tender documents and oversee the repair work carried out by the appointed contractor.
