Upgrade of Masincedane Bulk Water Scheme at Keiskamahoek

sAfriCoast Consulting Engineers (Pty) Ltd was responsible for the design and implementation of the upgrading of the Masincedane Bulk Water Scheme close to the villages of Masincedane, Lower Gxulu, Upper Gxulu, Lower Mnyameni, Upper Mnyameni, all in the vicinity of Keiskammahoek in the Amahlati Local Municipality, Eastern Cape Province.

Upgrading of the Masincedane Bulk Water Scheme has proven to be a challenging and diverse project with elements incorporating everything from civil, structural, mechanical and electrical works at the water treatment works; construction of new pipeline, environmental considerations, technical challenges and client requirements, not the least amongst which entailed ensuring that the plant remained operational throughout the construction stage.

The Employer’s objective was to provide 750l per household per day to consumers and this was achieved by upgrading of the Masincedane Rural Water Supply Scheme. AfriCoast Consulting Engineers was responsible for the investigations, planning, reporting, design, implementation and construction monitoring of the following work:

  • Masincedane Water Treatment Works expansion from 4.0Ml/day to 6.5Ml/day, including 2 x reinforced concrete water storage reservoirs (one at the treatment works and one at the old works);
  • Mnyameni pipeline which comprised of construction of approximately 11,000m of 160mm Class 9 rising mains and two clear water pump station with duty points of 10.4 l/s @ 28m and 5.4 l/s @ 58m.

Construction of the entire scheme was successfully completed and handed over to the Employer in November 2019, at a construction project cost of R44.6 million (R52.5 million including indirect cost).
